Notes: This cassette featured only Steve and Ed playing guitar,
and occasionally, tambourine, and keyboard. This version
of "Great Provider" would later appear as a b-side on the
"Jane" single. Ed Robertson estimates about 600 copies of
this tape were made. Steven Page says the number is more
  like 150.

BARENAKED LUNCH (1990) (aka "The Pink Tape")
  Cassette (Canada) Page Publications
    1. Night Photographs
    2. Trouble With Tracy
    3. Blame It On Me
    4. Be My Yoko Ono
    5. If I Had $1,000,000
Notes: The songs were recorded on Ed's Yamaha 4 track recorder,
with Ed and Steve producing and Ed mixing. The Creeggans
had joined the band by this time, and are on the cassette,
but Tyler had yet to join. 2,000 copies were made, but all
were mastered incorrectly, and they play too fast. As a
result, very few tapes are in circulation. Meant as a demo
tape, the problems with this tape led to the band making
  "The Yellow Tape".

back cover with black lettering. The UK version does not have the
multimedia portion, but includes the "UK edit" of
"If I Had $1,000,000", which is really the "Gordon" version minus
the line about pre-wrapped sausages. The European promo
disc comes with a green Reprise j-card, and incorrectly lists the
following songs as "Straw Hat And Old Dirty Hankerchief", and
"Old Apartment". The Euro-Promo version also does not include

    6. Straw Hat and Old Dirty Hank (live)
    7. Brian Wilson (Gordon version)
Notes: The limited edition can most easily be distinguished from the
standard version if still sealed by the fact that the limited
edition is marked as such on the top of the jewel case. The
limited edition has a blue sticker on the outer wrapper, while
the standard version has a yellow sticker. 100,000 copies of the
limited edition were pressed. The promo version has a black and
white front cover with the track listings, and no back cover.
The promo disc is plain, with black lettering. There is also a
second version of the promo version, which comes in a blue-tinted
cardboard sleeve which reproduces the album cover, and says
"CD Advance" on it. The disc is labeled as "CD Advance" as well.
There are two different Japanese advance promo cassettes. One
comes with an orange j-card, which has a picture of the Stunt
cover, with the Japanese release date. (November 11, 1998) This
orange label tape also lists the song lists the tracks. There is no
catalog number for this blue version. Similarly, the tapes themselves
have repective orange and blue labels, with the orange tape having
Japanese writing. The blue tape is written in English. The European
promo version comes in a slimline jewel box, with standard green Euro
Promo sleeve. Both the sleeve and the disc itself incorrectly call “One Week”
“Temptation’s Wings”. The European Special Edition has a white sticker on the
front labeling it as such. The live tracks on disc two of the Special Edition
are all identical to the Rock Spectacle versions. The band did write a handful
of other songs, but never had time to record them. There is what Steven calls
an "Electronic" version of "When You Dream" which is substantially different
from the album version (and demo version).

    4. Shoe Box (album version) 2:54
Notes: Promo copies of this disc have a generic white inlay
card, with no printing on it. The promo version of the disc is plain
with black lettering, not a picture disc. The promo disc has no front
cover, but has a sticker in the lower right corner that has the release
date on it. Originally, "$1,000,000" was going to be a live version,
from the 1995 KBCO radio broadcast of the BNL Denver
concert, but that was changed at the last minute. The live
video clips on the multi-media portion of the disc were
recorded at a concert at The Vic Theatre in Chicago on
  July 20, 1995.

    2. Trust Me 2:48
    3. Shoe Box (radio remix) 3:09
Notes: UK release by Warner/Reprise. "$1,000,000" is the so-called
"UK edit", which is really the "Gordon" version minus the line
about pre-wrapped sausages. "Trust Me" is missing the opening
count found on the "Shoe Box" EP.

The Old Apartment (1996): pro-CD-8581-R Reprise (North America)
    1. radio remix 3:36 (disc lists time at 3:34)
    2. Rock Spectacle album version 3:22 (disc lists time at 3:22)
Notes: Promo only release by Reprise. Disc has no front cover, and

    1. The Old Apartment (radio remix) 3:36 (disc lists time at 3:35)
    2. Lovers In A Dangerous Time 4:01 (disc lists time at 4:00)
Notes: Disc package incorrectly lists "Lovers In A Dangerous Time"
as originally appearing on the Bruce Cockburn tribute album
"Stealing Fire". (It is called "Kick At The Darkness".) Also
"Lovers" has been remixed for this single.

Brian Wilson (September, 1997): pro-CD-8981-R Reprise Records (US)

    3. Back 2:38
Notes: Disc package incorrectly lists "Break Your Heart" as
  originally appearning on "Gordon".

Govatsos Shuffle: pro-CD-9132-R Reprise Records (US)
    1. Govatsos Shuffle 1:48
Notes: Promo only single. Andrew Govatsos is a Reprise Rep. The
track is a rap done live at the 8-26-97 show in Boston. The CD was
made primarily as a joke, for distrubution in the New England
market, the territory that Govatsos handles. Supposedly 500
of these discs were pressed, but that number seems too high.
The covers were done on a HP Laser Jet, and the front cover is
a picture of Govatsos, along with the text "We’re Off To A
Great Start", and the title, "Govatsos Shuffle".

Night Photographs (December, 1997): LR 9701 (Canada)
    1. Night Photographs 2:12
    2. God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen 3:30
Notes: CD given to members of "The Ladies Room", The Barenaked
Ladies fan club. Night Photographs is the speed corrected version
from Barenaked Lunch. (The Pink Tape.) God Rest Ye Merry
Gentlemen was recorded live backstage at the Palace of Auburn
Hills, MI on 12/8/96, with Sarah McLachlan on vocals as well.
The band played this song and two others live on the air on WPLT
Detroit, MI. (Sarah also sang on "Silent Night".) BNL and Sarah
were co-headlining the WPLT "Holiday Hootenanny". This is
actually an edited version from the one that was broadcast, because
Sarah flubbed a line. CD comes in a cardboard sleeve. Footage from
BNL’s performance at the "Holiday Hootenanny" was also used in
  the live Brian Wilson video.

Brian Wilson: PRO-CD-9228 Reprise Records (US) (1998)

    2. Brian Wilson (Rock Spectacle album version.)

APPENDIX 1: "Thanks for the info, now how can I find all of this stuff?"

I get email every once in a while from people that want to know how
to get the items that I have listed in the discography. The short answer is,
"It is pretty hard". The early UK singles are all out of print, and weren't
made in huge numbers to begin with. The vinyl has been even more difficult
to track down.

For those in the US, my suggestion is to buy the record collecting
magazine "Goldmine", which is published bi-weekly by Krause Publications. If
you can't find it locally, call them directly at (715)445-2214. This
magazine has hundreds of ads in it, and many of the dealers have email
addresses. If you don't find what you are looking for in the ads, email them
to ask for specific items. "Goldmine" also has a listing of record shows all
over the world. Record shows are also a good place to find stuff. Also,
check out your local used record stores. A similar magazine to "Goldmine"
in the UK would be the cleverly titled "Record Collector". Recently a
number of BNL related items have been posted for sale at the Ebay web site
( HYPERLINK http://www.ebay.com www.ebay.com ) as well.

Additionally www.bnl.org has a tape trader section which has some of
the early stuff available. I haven’t done any trades there, so I can’t say how different
people handle trades.

I have found that finding oddball BNL stuff takes persistence,
patience, and luck. But, if the music is worth it to you, you will enjoy the
challenge.

APPENDIX 2: The "lost" Barenaked Ladies album.

Shortly before Tyler joined the band, the Ladies recorded some songs
on Ed's four-track recorder, in Steve's parents basement. Only a few tapes
were made, (Less than six.) The original recordings are in a shoebox at Ed's
house. The album, called "Barenaked Recess" contained the following:
    Brian Wilson
    Hello City
    Skinhead
    The Flag
    Lilac Girl
    When Doves Cry
Material Girl (with Steve playing flute.)
    Crazy
    Blame It On Me

All of these songs are unreleased at this time. Please don't ask me how to
get a copy of this tape, I can't help. (Really!)

About this Discography:

The early forms of this discography were the works of Jeff Jaworski who, to the best of my knowledge, will not be doing any further updates. Realizing the great wealth of information that is contained in this discography, and wanting it to continue for many years to come, we have decided to continue the great tradition.

This version of the discography was last revised quite a while ago. We are currently reworking this section, so be on the looking for updates and improvements. If you have any contributions in the form of images or recording infomation please pass them along. We know that there is probably a good deal missing from this discography, especially regarding regional and radio-issued discs, so all help is appreciated.
