Tyler Stewart, drummer extraordinaire, took time out of his schedule to answer some questions from the barenaked.net board members. Check out his answers and head over to the board for discussion!

Who's your favorite band on the cruise (BNL excluded, of course)?
(iambe)

Hmm, that’s a tough one. I’m a big fan of Sloan, and have been ever since the CASBY Awards in Toronto in 1991, when singer and bassist Chris Murphy gave us this shout out in the middle of rocking the shit out of “Underwhelmed”: “I’m gonna say WORD! to Barenaked Ladies!” He then proceeded to hop off the stage onto our table (old school awards show with dinner tables) to rock out for us. Sloan have been around for almost 20 years and they continue to put out great music. Their last two albums – Never Hear The End of It and Parallel Play are both outstanding. I also love The Weakerthans. John K. Samson is an amazingly emotional writer. I’m excited as hell to have them on the Cruise too.

Who were your main influences as a drummer, and who inspires you now?
(matt717)

Growing up: Ringo, John Bonham, Buddy Rich, Neil Peart, Stewart Copeland, – almost in that order. I also liked Phil Collins before he got all soft and shit. Nowadays? Justin Peroff from Broken Social Scene (workhorse guy, great hair!) Steven Drodz from flaming lips and Jason McGerr from Death Cab For Cutie.

Will you be guest drumming for anyone this cruise?
(Cynicalwordsmith)

I don’t think so as of yet. You never know who’s gonna knock their Wife up though!!! That said I love sitting in, so we’ll see.

Since we have Brothers Creeggan, Thin Buckle, and TVP, any chance of some Don't Talk Dance on the cruise? The BNL community demands it!
(Barenaked Doc)

As a good friend of mine once said: “You never know what’s gonna happen on the Cruise-ah”

Hey Ty! Can you tell us if / when the S&DIII DVD will be available? Will S&DV be filmed?
(Ainer)

After a long delay (busy director/weird random events) we finally have the DVD Master in our hands. We’re figuring out how to get it out there as we speak, but I can tell you if you were on S&D III, You’ll have first dibs on getting it very soon. Currently there are no plans to film S&D V.

Tyler, I will be a first time Shipper this year. In 10 words or less, can you describe just what the Hell I'm getting myself into?
(Emily Jane)

Yes. You Never Know What’s Gonna Happen On The Cruise-ah.

While on the cruise, how do you feel about fans coming up to you and asking for pictures/autographs? Do you think, "Hey, I'm on vacation too! Gimme a break!" or is it more, "You paid to have this access to us - I'm happy to do it!” or is it somewhere in between? If you have any insight as to how your fellow band mates feel about this issue, please also enlighten us.
(becky11)

Thanks for asking this becky11. The cruise is certainly not a vacation for Barenaked Ladies. We work our asses off playing multiple shows, hosting events, and sitting in with our friends. We choose to interact with our fans on our terms, something which is both enjoyable and occasionally very difficult. I don’t really believe you pay to have guaranteed personal access to us – that would be impossible to pull off, since there are so many of you fine folks who’d like to have a picture or a chat with us. I find that I’m running around a lot, getting from venue to venue, trying to eat, see artists who inspire me, and generally trying not be cooped up backstage or in my cabin. If I’m not in a mad rush, I’ll stop for a picture – If I am – I’ll probably politely decline. I know there are some of you out there who think I hate taking photo’s, but that’s not true – sometimes I just have to be somewhere fast and I don’t feel I can take the time. I think we all feel this way. In general though, there are some etiquette rules I feel brazen enough to lay out,. Kinda like I did back in the day when people would wait by our busses in the middle of February in like, Buffalo or Minneapolis, wearing just a T-Shirt, freezing their asses off just so they could get a picture. Often people would be angry cause I hadn’t raced right off the stage outside to sign for them, and they would be standing there shivering, with blue lips and a “wh wh what t-t-took you s-so long!!!! My question back was “Where’s you’re friggin’ coat, homee? It’s minus 10 out here!” But I digress. Here’s Uncle Tyler’s Picture/Autograph Etiquette On The Cruise-ah
  1. Always be polite, and ask the question “Steve(Ed, Jim, Kevin, Tyler)? Do You Have Time for a Picture?”
  2. Never say “I hate to bother you Kev, but.. “ Just ask for what you want, politely of course.
  3. If a swarm has happened, I.E. several people have noticed Ed watching GBS and all of them want pictures, be the cool one and wait for another opportunity later. That way, Ed will be happier because he got to enjoy some of the other acts on the cruise too.
  4. Conversation – witty, silly, genuine, is sometimes way better than a picture. Just ask Sally about our Sausage Talk (not what you think!).
  5. Try to avoid thinking I’m the antichrist for not signing or posing for a picture. Chances are you’ll get Jim’s or Ed’s or Kev’s or Tiny’s. The cruise is still fun, y’all.
  6. If it’s minus 10 on the Lido Deck, please wear a coat when you try to ask me for a picture!!!!!

Is the Mythical and Box Set still on the horizon?
(Cynicalwordsmith)

Absolutely! It’s coming, we promise! We’re still sorting through a giant mountain of material (hundreds of hours of live shows over 20 years, hundreds of Demo’s and long forgotten about recordings, alternate takes, video clips from cancelled TV shows, insanely ridiculous between- song -banter by young men with higher voices and the giggles, you know….) and it’s taking longer than we thought. We want to make sure we put together a thorough and compelling package – one that you’ll be glad you waited for.

I was wondering whatever became of the "DVD quality version" of the Don't Talk Dance music video mentioned on the blog forever and a day ago. Was that going to be part of a BNL project (the fabled "box set," I assume) or dare we actually hope for a reissue of the DTD album?
(IWakeUpStrange)

You never know what’s gonna happen….. actually, we’d like to track that down and put it out on the Box Set. It’s somewhere out there, we just need to find it. I’ve got my best men on it!

Tyler, I’m curious what your thoughts are regarding the rise of drumming in video games (the Rock Band series and upcoming Guitar Hero World Tour).
(Shaun)

I think it’s great that the Drums are the only instrument you can kinda actually learn to play for real in Rock Band. You’d still need to get on a real kit and learn some technique, but it’s possible to hone your co-ordination and rhythm using the pads. I think we’ll see a band one day who uses the interface to make their own music. The world needs more drummers?????? Incidentally, I’m not very good at Drums on Rock Band… I love singing though!

Tyler, Have you been in contact with Joe Self recently? Can you tell us how is recovery has gone since last year?
(Shaun)

I actually haven’t talked to Joe much all year. I hear through the grapevine that he’s doing well though, although I think he had to give up his stuntman career! We all miss Joe and wish him the best. I had some of the greatest times EVER on tour with that Texan Tough Guy.

Who's your prediction to win the Cup this year?
(matt717)

Not The Toronto Maple Leafs!! I’m going to be as bold as to say this, matt717: In this, their 100th Year, The Montreal Canadiens will win their 25th Stanley Cup. Second Choice? Rangers. All original six, Baby.
